3-Step
Three kicks where the bar expects four, and the gap does the dancing.
The pattern
2 bars, sixteenth notes. Loops until you stop it.
Count the kick lane. Bar one is beat 1, the and of 2 and the a of 3. Bar two is beat 1, the and of 2 and beat 4, so the third kick has moved a sixteenth later and the bar lands differently even though the count is the same. Beat 3 never gets a kick in either bar, which is the whole trick. The rimshot holds beat 2 and the and of 4, with a ghost on the and of 3 in bar two. Closed hats take the and of each beat, leaving the a free, with a pickup on the last sixteenth of bar two, and the shaker covers the rest of the sixteenths between 34 and 54, lifting to 64 on the final step. The cowbell plays the a of 1, the e of 3 and the e of 4, never landing with a kick, and adds a fourth stroke on the a of 3 in bar two. Open hats sit on the a of 2 in bar one, then on the a of 1 and the e of 4 in bar two.
What it is
By 2023 amapiano had been the biggest sound on the continent for four years and every producer in Gauteng could build one in their sleep. 3-step is what a handful of them did about that. The move is arithmetic: take the kick from four a bar down to three, put them at uneven distances, and let the log drum and the shakers argue about where beat 3 actually was. Everything else stays where amapiano left it, the Rhodes chords, the gated reverb, the rimshot off the beat, so the only thing a listener has to relearn is the count. Producers around Durban and Johannesburg pushed it hard through 2023 and 2024, and it spread quickly because a DJ can mix it out of amapiano without touching the tempo.
What it sounds like
Same room as amapiano, different footing. A soft kick with no click, a log drum sliding down a fifth, shakers running most of the sixteenths, and a rimshot ticking somewhere off the grid. The chords are Rhodes or a soft pad, held long, sent to a reverb that is gated so the tail stops before it smears. Vocals come in and out without ever running the arrangement. What changes is the sense of weight: because the kick misses a beat every bar, the log drum has to hold the low end alone for a moment, and that moment is what people hear as the genre.
Key elements
- Three kicks a barBeat 1, the and of 2, then a third hit that moves. The bar never gets four, and the missing one is where a dancer puts a step.
- A third kick that migratesIt sits on the a of 3 in one bar and on beat 4 in the next. Keeping it still turns the pattern back into ordinary syncopated house.
- The log drum, stillAmapiano's pitched bass hit survives intact and now has more room, because it is covering the beat the kick gave up.
- Hats on the andClosed hats land on the and of each beat, which is the opposite of amapiano's habit of ticking the a. That swap alone changes the lean of the bar.
- A cowbell counting threeA dry bell on the a of 1, the e of 3 and the e of 4, deliberately not lining up with the kick, so the three-count is audible twice in different places.
How to get them
- Take a kick awayStart from a working amapiano loop, delete one kick, then move the remaining three until none of them lands on beat 3. If it still feels square, move the third one further.
- Log drumSine with a pitch envelope falling a fifth in about 80 milliseconds and a click layer on top, then play it as a melody. Put a note on the beat the kick abandoned.
- Swing0.56, a touch straighter than amapiano. The uneven kick spacing already supplies the lurch, and heavy swing on top of it makes the count unreadable.
- ShakersTwo shaker samples between velocity 34 and 54, covering the sixteenths but skipping the and of each beat so the closed hat has that step to itself.
- RimshotBeat 2 and the and of 4, dry, around velocity 80, with a ghost on the and of 3 in the second bar. It is a marker, not a backbeat, so keep it small.
- CowbellOne short bell sample, high-passed at 500Hz, no reverb. Three strokes a bar, none of which coincide with a kick. It is the part that keeps the pattern legible at low volume.
